Sunday Fishing

We ran out of Rudee yesterday looking for wahoo. We ran south and fished a bit north of the Point. We caught a couple of dolphin, pulled off a tuna and had a few mystery bites. It was slow. A lot of bait on the surface. Boats south of the Point were catching blackfin. A few billfish were caught out over 1000 fathoms. The occasional yellowfin would pop up anywhere. We saw a couple free-jump in about 50 fathoms. No real hot bite to go to anywhere. We did a little bottom fishing and caught some sea bass and blueline tilefish and then ran north and trolled just offshore of the B Tower. There we got bites of false albacore. We kept a couple for bait and released the rest. Three qualified for release citations. We had live spot and croaker in the livewell. We dropped them around the Tower and caught 25 or so amberjack and then ran out of bait. They were all fat. Two were long enough for release citations. No wahoo but plenty of pullage on a pretty day in the ocean.

Uncle Russell report from John Hunt

Ken,

It was that time again to take Uncle Russell out Spot-en, and of course the only difference was………He’s 100 years old, He caught 3 or 4 doubles out of the 188 spot that we kept, we fished for 3 1/2 hours, and today I think he got a little tired, because he didn’t complain when we asked was he ready to go in, but this year he did say …..”Make sure you put on the books for next years trip”.

Youth and Ladies Tournament

Each year, the Peninsula Salt Water Sport Fisherman’s Association hosts a Youth and Ladies Tournament. The tournament is free to participants and is followed by a picnic and awards presentation. The targeted species are croaker and flounder. This picnic is held at Dare Marina and Yacht Sales. Yesterday’s (Oct. 3) rain drove the picnic inside but, as always, Dare Marina took care of us and made room for us in their dry storage facility.

This year’s winners:

Youth Croaker

1st Place: Spencer Elford: 1 pound 9 ounces
2nd Place: Caleb Sava: 1 pound 6 ounces
3rd Place: Gaston Shepard: 1 pound 5 ounces

2nd Place: Hayden Head: 4 pounds 9 ounces
3rd Place: Spencer Elford: 4 pounds

Ladies Croaker

Two other PSWSFA tournaments that finished last month:

The Wilcox Bait & Tackle Triple Threat Tournament targeted red drum, black drum, and cobia. Each angler was allowed to enter one fish of each species and their total length determined the winners. 1st Place was Wes Blow with 157.75 inches. 2nd Place was Charles Southall with 153 inches. 3rd Place was Ken Neill with 148 inches.

The Don Forman Cobia Tournament was sponsored by Bishop Fishing Supply. 1st Place was Wes Blow with a 72 pound cobia. 2nd Place was Barclay Shepard with a 65 pound cobia. 3rd Place was Scott Elford with a 48 pound 1 ounce cobia.

Fishing Report 10.4.10

Water temps are still near 75 degrees in the rivers and creeks which are full of fresh water following the approximately 20 inches of rain we have had. There are still a lot of fish in these stained waters but action won’t pick up until the waters clear somewhat.

Yellow bellied spot were being caught in Butlers Hole, at the Spike and the Mudhole and off Gwynn Island. right up to the storms arriving.

Good sized schools of Gray Trout continue to be found off Gwynn Island and in the mouth of the Rappahannock.

Fair numbers of medium sized speckled trout have shown up in the Ware Neck area this week.

CITATION: We registered a 48″ red drum release citation from the Piankatank River Bridge area! The huge drum was caught Friday, by Shawn Jackson of Gloucester while bottom fishing with cut spot.

Fish Crazy

The Mid-Atlantic edition of The Fisherman magazine is closing down. We are losing our source of in-depth, weekly fishing reports for the area. Ric Burnley is filling in that void with an on-line subscription site. The Burnleys were a big part of the Mid-Atlantic Fisherman so I expect this will be a good source of information for anglers in the Mid-Atlantic. It is just getting started but the initial fishing reports have been posted. You can check it out at www.fishcrazy.info .

Fishing Report 9.27.10

Water temps are still near 80 in the rivers and creeks and that is a temperature Spanish Mackeral are comfortable in. We weighed in a citation Spanish on Tuesday which was caught trolling on Windmill Bar. This is the only citation Spanish we have seen this year. Seeing a big Spanish is a reminder of all the Bluefish and drum still in the bay with this unusually warm water.

Yellow bellied spot to 11″ are being caught in Butlers Hole, at the Spike and the Mudhole and off Gwynn Island.

Medium to large croaker were still available in the Whitestone Bridge area over the weekend.

Red drum above the 26″ maximum were caught near New Point by bottom fishermen.

Gray Trout in the 10-16″ range have been found in good sized schools off Gwynn Island. The schools look like a trash pile on your fish finder. These fish are limited to one keeper per person (12″ or larger) but can be enjoyed by catch and release fishing blood worms or Fish Bites or by jigging Sting Silvers.

A lot of small speckled trout have shown up in the lower Piankatank this week.

When striper season starts next Monday the water will be too warm for fish to begin schooling up. Trolling won’t work until schooling begins at water temps below 60 degrees. Best approaches will be chumming to structure and using live or cut baits. Small boats with 3 or fewer fishermen should also be able to find stripers casting to docks and bridge structure.

CITATION:

Spanish Mackeral, 27″, 4 lbs., 6 oz, caught on a trolled spoon 9.21.10 at Windmill Bar by Cliff Canada of Whitestone.

Fishing Report 9.20.10

Spot are being caught in Butlers Hole, at the Spike and in 25-28′ deep waters off Gwynn Island.

Croaker are still available in the creeks with some lartger specimens coming from shallow waters in the evening.

Puppy drum are being caught over hard bottom in the shallows.

Pan sized Gray Trout have made showings in good sized schools off Gwynn Island. The schools look like a trash pile on your fish finder. These fish are limited to one keeper per person (12″ or larger) but can be enjoyed catch and release by jigging Sting Silvers or bucktail jigs tipped with pink or electric chicked soft plastics or gulp baits.

The Piankatank produced a few specks from around the oyster reefs this week.

Small striper are showing around structure. Perhaps we will have a good striper season.
