New Virginia Record Wahoo

The write-up below and the horizontal photo were done by Bill Hall, the VSWFT Committee member that went to examine the fish. The vertical photo was sent to Bill by the boat captain. Not sure who actually snapped the shot. Bill can be reached at: esangler@verizon.net . The Director of the VSWFT is Lewis Gillingham. He can be reached at: lewis.gilllingham@mrc.virginia.gov and (757) 491-5160.

On June 23, 2012, Susan Nelson, of Whiteford, MD boated a 122 pound, 1 ounce wahoo while fishing with Capt. Keith Neal aboard the Wachapreague-based charter vessel, Teaser. The huge fish measured 80.25 inches in length with a whopping 33″ girth. The Teaser was a participant in the MSSA tournament and hooked the large fish while trolling for tuna off the Lumpy Bottom on a Joe Shute Lure and ballyhoo combination. Nelson landed the fish using a custom rod with a Shimano Tiagra reel loaded with 80# Mamoi Hi-Catch Diamond line, The lure/ballyhoo combination was rigged on a 130 mono leader with a Mustad hook. The fish was positively identified by VSFT State Record Committee member Bill Hall, in accordance with VSFT State Record procedures. Hall also completed the State Record Application.

According To Capt. Neal, the wahoo hit the bait as it was fished from the longrigger and made a blistering run. The fish came up to the surface four times but did not jump causing the crew to think that it was foul hooked a blue marlin. The fifth time that the fish surfaced during the 45-minute fight, the crew saw the telltale stripes and initially thought striped marlin but knew that they were not native to the Atlantic Ocean, then they realized that it was monster wahoo hooked on a monofilament leader.

“We knew we had one shot at gaffing it with the mono leader,” Capt. Neal commented. “The fish came along side and the mate hit it with the gaff, but the gaff’s rubber handle pulled off. We put a second gaff in it and pulled it on board. I knew it was big and first estimated it around 90-pounds. When I pulled out the tape measurer and it stretched the tape to 80-inches, I knew we had a much bigger fish and called my wife as soon as we got close enough to shore to get a cell signal. When she looked up the existing state record, I knew we had a shot at beating it.”

The fish was weighed in on scales certified in April of 2012 at the Wachapreague Marina.

July/August Issue of Sport Fishing

Virginia in Sport Fishing

The July/August issue of Sport Fishing magazine has two articles featuring Virginia and some of our local captains and anglers.

The first is Chesapeake Bay Redfish by Chris Woodward, starting on page 50. It is part of their “The Night Bite” special. In it, she quotes me and Capt. Craig Paige. There are 3 photos in the article. I took 2 of them: one of Chris Boyce releasing a red, the other is just of a crab on a hook. Ric Burnley took the other of Capt. Blake Hayden holding a big red.

The second article is “Sleepy Little Slam Town. Virginia Beach, the East’s Hottest Billfish Battleground” by Mike Mazur, starting on page 56. In it, he says that “Things have been so good in Virginia Beach lately that you might call it the new Venezuela.” There are several local photo credits. Ric Burnley has one photo. Harry Hindmarsh has two. One of his photos shows Rudee’s. For this billfish article, they used one photo of mine… of a tuna. It is in a sidebar about the crazy bluefin bite we had this past winter. Michael Hurst is holding up his tuna in the photo. Dr. John Graves is quoted in the article. The local captains and boats featured are: Capt. Steve Richardson-Backlash, Capt. Justin Wilson-Just Right, Capt. David Wright-High Hopes, and Capt. Mike Standing-Waterman. The Virginia Beach Fishing Center is also featured.

Southern Towers

We loaded the livewells with croakers and ran to the South Tower yesterday. We caught bluefish. We did not stay long, heading on to the B Tower. There we found decent numbers of amberjack. It was not great. Wes Blow and Steve Martin each caught fish over 50 inches and we had a few others close to 50 inches. Most of the jacks were much smaller. There were nice spadefish there but smaller jacks were much more aggressive in biting our clam baits. Over the radio, we could hear good action on yellowfin tuna, dolphin, a few bigeyes, and a good number of marlin encounters a bit to the east of us.

Cobia and Big Red Drum

Charles Southall and myself went out yesterday afternoon with Capt. Jorj Head, (757) 262-9004. We started out sight-fishing for cobia inside the 4th island of the CBBT. We saw 4 (a pair and two singles). We caught a 47-inch fish. Another looked like it ate the eel but it did not come tight. Clouds moved in and made it difficult to see the fish. We met up with 16-year-old Hunter Southall in his new Maycraft and got some drum bait from them. We ran over to the buoy 8/10 area where we watched Jorj catch some big red drum (Charles and I have already caught plenty of drum this year so we just kept Jorj on the rod).

Red-Hot Red Drum

I went out with Charles Southall yesterday afternoon to fish for drum. We were mostly looking for black drum so we had a lot of clams. I got what crabs I had in my crab pot and we went fishing. We set up in the buoy 8-10 area. Right off, a cobia ate one of our clam baits. There was a lull after that until right behind the boat, several red drum came up and looked at us. A couple of rods went down and it was pretty much constant until we ran out of crabs. Charles bare-handed a sook floating by, put it on a hook, and caught another drum. There was a wide range in sizes from 41 to 51 inches long. We never did catch a black though Capt. Zach Hoffman had caught some earlier in the day. Every crab we had got eaten. We boated 7 drum, pulled off a number and broke one off when a drag got sticky. We were out of crabs and called it an evening.

It was an action-packed evening trip. Everyone was catching drum like crazy. Ric Burnley was anchored up wind of us. I do not know how many he caught but we could hear is drags screaming. Harry Hindmarsh was out there and ran out of crabs after 19 red drum. They went around and scooped up some more crabs so they could finish with an even 20. At one time, Harry had 6 reds hooked at once. Wes Blow was anchored on the other side of us. I think ended up with something like 14 reds. Both Ric and Wes were fishing solo. Those guys were hopping. Wes was fishing peeler/clam sandwiches. He was low on clam so we took some to him. By the time we got there, he was down to fishing just one rod and that one was hooked up. We waited while he landed that 47-inch fish and then handed him a bag of clams. Capt. Craig Paige was fishing the islands of the CBBT and called us on the radio for a report. He was catching a bunch of big stripers over the tubes and he had just caught a big red drum there also. The bite was on yesterday.
