Little Cobia

I went out with Stan Simmerman this morning after cobia, in the wind and rain. We caught 3 little cobia. Each was smaller than the one before. Before it got too embarrassing, we came in for lunch. Each fish was released with a tag.

Unlucky Sheep

I took Stan Simmerman and David Brabrand out after sheepshead this morning. We caught 2 citation-sized sheep to about 11 pounds. We also placed tags in 13 tautog (on Friday the 13th). We caught a 14th tog that was already tagged. Many impressive toadfish were also caught but nobody wanted their photo taken with a toad.

Another Day, Another Muskie

Or: One Fish, Two Fish
My limited muskie experience has been losing fish. I spent the past two days fishing with Blue Ridge Musky, www.blueridgemusky.com , to try to catch my first muskie. We fished the upper James River. It is gorgeous up in the Blue Ridge. I fished with Sam the first day, Jeremy the second. Both are great and know that river. The first day, we saw a lot of fish and had about 6 bites plus a lot of follows. Had my first muskie hooked on my second cast…which I lost. A lot of tutoring and I finally landed my first muskie. It was a nice one that was followed by an equally large fish during the fight. The second day was a lot slower. I “only” saw 6 muskie and had one bite. I got that one so my landing percentage is improving. Rather awesome muskie fishery that we have in Virginia that I just found out about. Saw a bunch of smallmouth bass. Both days, we saw some huge muskie. Like, we need a bigger boat fish.

Morning Tog

I had a decent morning tagging and releasing tautog at York Spit Reef. I did not catch any sheepshead or drum.

Preseason Cobia

I went out with Stan Simmerman to tag some preseason cobia. It was not hot and heavy, but we managed to get 2 tags out. It was a pretty day on the bay.

Mothers Day Tautog

I ran out with Stan Simmerman this morning for the sunrise sheepshead bite. The sheep slept in. We tagged and released 22 tautog. One, we recaptured after tagging it 30 minutes prior. We were back home in time to get cleaned up for Mothers Day Lunch.

Tuna on the Beach

Went out on the Special Kate this morning with Charles Southall, Hunter Southall, and Wes Blow. We went under the bridge soon after sunrise. We ran up the beach a bit and put out 3 baits. Fish on. Caught that one. Put 2 baits out while we worked on that fish. Fish on. Released that fish and put out the one remaining rigged bait while we tried to deal with the first one. Fish on. After releasing that one, we were smart enough not to put out anymore baits. Boat fueled, cleaned, and put up, fish cleaned…all before lunchtime.

Windy Reds

I ran out with Stan Simmerman at sunrise today. It was blowing. Stan caught a couple of big red drum. I was exceptional at netting his fish. We were back in for lunch. Lunch was fresh Outer Banks bluefin tuna courtesy of the Special Kate. Thank you Southalls!
