Deep-Drop June 1

We ran out and bottom fished around the Norfolk Canyon. We had a nice catch of blueline tilefish. Stan Simmerman caught our largest at 17 pounds. Chris Boyce was close with a 16 pound blueline. We caught some pretty sea bass, a good number of hake, and 5 golden tilefish. One of the goldens was only a head. Sharks made things interesting out there. We caught two big hammerheads and about 5 “sharks”, maybe dusky or bull. There were plenty of other shark encounters. We would get on a good spot and the sharks would find us. The sharks were a fun challenge on the gear we were using. It is quite an adventure to encourage those things to come up from 700 feet down. There were also a lot of mackerel, Chub/Boston, that we were catching on the bottom. They made great bait but it seemed that it was my job to crank those things up for the other guys to catch the big fish with. All of the sharks were released. Wes Blow and Chris Boyce each registered release citations. For Wes, along with a blueline tilefish citation, this makes 6 different citation species already for the year.
