Offshore Bottom Fishing Yesterday

We went bottom fishing yesterday, in the Norfolk Canyon area. Some yellowfin and dolphin were caught near us. We saw a free-jumping mako, whales and a bunch of other life. There was lot of grass and some lumber floating around. A blue marlin came and checked us out. The guys threw jigs at it.

Ric Burnley caught our two largest sea bass on his bug jig thing. We caught 3 smaller snowy grouper, too many wreckfish, a number of hake, blueline tilefish, bluefish and other critters. Lee Williams broke off our one golden tile after cranking it most of the way up. Ric broke off a big grouper. I broke off something big that I would say was a grouper but we were not in one of our normal grouper spots. Maybe a big shark.

Smart Kids

Both Cameron and Casey are now members of Mensa.

They have been members of Johns Hopkins’ Center for Talented Youth since about 3rd grade based on standardized test scores. They had to take college entrance exams in 8th grade and score at a certain percentile compared to college-bound seniors to continue in the program. Both received high state honors.

The Mensa Society has reviewed some of their test results and both have been accepted into “The High IQ Society”.

Drum Last Night

We went drum fishing yesterday evening. Slow except for a quadruple bite. There were 4 anglers…perfect, almost. I was the only one that did not stay tight so I got to be netman and photographer. Larry Horne and Charles Southall each caught blacks. Hunter Southall caught a red. That was it for us. Quit about 11 pm. We had Wes Blow on one side of us. Last report was 2 reds and 2 blacks for him. He was still fishing when we left. Steve Martin was anchored on the other side of us (after catching a half-dozen or so flounder) near Back River. They caught 2 blacks. We were in the buoy 10 area. Other boats around us were doing the same, a few drum, mixed colors.

Drum

Sunset thru Sunrise last night. 7 reds to 48.5 inches. Broke off one and pulled off another. Blacks were caught at buoy 13. Everyone caught reds. Most caught at Fisherman’s Island but fish were also caught on 9-Foot Shoal (My cousin had a black and a couple of reds there the last I talked to him) and Nautilus Shoal. We will be back out there tomorrow night.

Fishing the Miss Hatteras

The Peninsula Salt Water Sport Fisherman’s Association chartered the Miss Hatteras. It rained on and off all day, it was rough, the fishing was not good, and some of our best catches had to be released due to regulations. We had fun anyway.

We are a fishing club. We have our own boats and mostly fish with our own regular crews within the club. We have social functions on land but none of us have a boat large enough to get a big group of us out on the water together. Chartering the Miss Hatteras lets us have a club meeting while fishing with some people we don’t normally fish with. Capt. Spurgeon Stowe is a great guy to fish with and his hard-working mates do everything they can to make sure you have a good trip.

We never got on a really hot spot but we did manage to catch some fish. Charles Southall brought a high-speed trolling set up for use when running between spots. It got hit a few times and he had something substantial (we think wahoo) on for a bit before the hook pulled. The largest fish of the day was caught by Bill Tice. He got a big sandtiger up the boat. Impressive looking beast. We caught some nice red snapper and sea bass that had to be released due to closed seasons. Probably the best fish brought back to the dock was a gag grouper caught by Martin Freed. Some pretty triggerfish were caught. The big fish pot was won by a jack of some sort. www.hatterasfishingcaptain.com

Yesterday’s Fishing, Today’s Daily Press

Fished yesterday evening with Charles for reds. 4 other club boats were over there. No catches other than cownose rays for any of us.
