Cobia, But not for us.

I fished with Wes Blow today. We started at the Bluefish Rock area. No action for a couple of hours when Keith Blackburn anchored up near us. We decided to try another spot and ran to York Spit. As we were putting out the anchor, Keith calls to tell us they had just caught one. We got more calls. They ended up catching 5 with the largest weighing 61 pounds. There were fish caught at York Spit also, just not by us.

When we got back into Wallace’s they had weighed in a number of fish in addition to Keith’s including another in the sixties and one in the seventies. The said all the larger fish were caught chumming.

Today, I received the first print of Bill Pappas’ original. He said that he wanted the first print to go to the state record holder. Pretty darn cool.

Grouper, Tilefish, Sea Bass….

We had a good day bottom fishing yesterday. We caught sea bass, blueline tilefish, golden tilefish, hake, snowy grouper, wreckfish, blackbelly rosefish, and way too many smooth dogfish and conger eels.

The Past Few Days

Drum fishing is excellent. Sometimes, drum bait becomes dinner. Cobia have arrived in the bay. A handful have been caught by anglers fishing for drum. The one we caught was just a pup but larger ones have been caught. More will be caught now that we will start fishing for them. All of the puppy drum photos are all associated with Hunter Southall fishing the shallows around Poquoson. The big reds and blacks are from the general area of Fisherman’s Island in a variety of boats. We are all just zipping over there whenever work, school, weather allow.

Short Drum Trip

One of my intended drum baits turned into a softshell. Tricia ate it. We took the Healthy Grin to the drum grounds, really to use the windless for the first time and to see if the anchor that came with the boat was big enough. It was not. It actually held but on the tide swing, it bent like a pretzel, trip over. Before that happened, Charles did catch our first cobia of the year. A little guy that was tagged and released. Chris Boyce is holding it in the photo. It ate a clam. Charles took our hard crabs home with him to turn them into his dinner tonight.

Tautog 2014

There have been a total of 47 tautog citations registered in Virginia this year. 24 of those were caught on the Healthy Grin.

Big Black Drum 5-9-14

There was a very nice bite of clear-nosed skate going on when this big black drum crashed the party. The drum was caught near buoy 10. The skate were biting everywhere. Ric Burnley was at Fisherman’s Island where they caught a nice red drum.

Big Red Drum 5-2-14

Charles Southall and I took his Albemarle out to try for red drum in the Eastern Shore surf after work. We had not been fishing more than 15 minutes when the first screaming bite occurred. Charles caught a really thick, 53-inch red drum. Not long after, I caught a 49-inch drum that looked rather small after the beast Charles caught. We missed two other bites before heading back in.
