Super Moon and Wreck Fishing

I ran over to the Eastern Shore under the Super Moon on Saturday to give the tarpon a try. I got to see tarpon but what I caught were a lot of sharks.

Charles Southall is speaking at the PSWSFA meeting this week. His topic is “Inshore Wreck Fishing”. So, we went inshore wreck fishing on Sunday to get him some new material. We ended up catching ten different species including tautog, triggerfish, spadefish, flounder, cobia, and sea bass. Steve Martin even had a nice dolphin hooked up for awhile on his flounder rig.

Norfolk Canyon 7-6-14

We ran the “Healthy Grin” out to the Norfolk Canyon to catch some tuna. As was the case with our last tuna trip, we caught marlin. I did not hear of a single tuna being caught but there were plenty of marlin encounters. We saw 3 white marlin, hooking 2. The first pulled the hook after some impressive aerial acrobatics. We released the second at boatside. We also caught some small dolphin.

Brent Meadors was fishing a bit inshore of us in the ” Breike” . In about 40 fathoms, they found a weed line holding some big dolphin. Chris Williams caught their largest. His fish weighed in at 45 pounds 8 ounces.

Flounder Bowl 2014 Results

One hundred six teams competed in the Flounder Bowl on June 28. These anglers had to deal with very challenging conditions as they tried to capture a winning catch of flatfish. Small craft advisories were issued after the start of the tournament. The stiff easterly winds made boat handling and flounder fishing a challenge. All of the captains did well keeping their crews safe. One boat did have to be towed in due to mechanical issues but they ended up doing fine.

Of the one hundred six teams, fifty-one were entered by tournament sponsors and competed against each other for the Sponsors Trophy in addition to fishing the Flounder Bowl. The winner of this year’s Sponsor Challenge was M & M Custom Painting. Their team was captained by Kenny Hoffman and their winning 3-fish stringer weighed in at 14.89 pounds. M & M Custom Painting gets to keep the Sponsors Trophy until next year’s tournament where they can try to win it again.

The Flounder Bowl is a team tournament but there were three individual awards presented. The largest flounder caught by a lady angler was a 4.76 pound fish caught by Michelle Dix. She won $100 and a pair of Costa sunglasses. The largest flounder caught by a youth was a 3.43 pound fish caught by Austin Bradley. Austin won $100 and a pair of Costa sunglasses. The largest flounder caught by a member of the Peninsula Salt Water Sport Fisherman’s Association was a 6.13 pound fish caught by Randy Dedmond. He won $500.

Tournament winners were determined by the combined weight of their team’s heaviest three flounder. Cash prizes were paid through six places. There were two optional calcuttas. One was for the single heaviest flounder. The second was for the heaviest stringer. The proceeds from each Calcutta was a 100% payout to the winner. Forty-nine boats entered the Big Fish Calcutta. Thirty-five boats entered the Stringer Calcutta.

The winner of the 2014 Flounder Bowl won it big. Look-N-Hook, captained by Aubrey Williams, III weighed in a 3-fish stringer of 17.68 pounds. This took first place in the overall tournament and won the Stringer Calcutta. They were also entered into the Big Fish Calcutta and they won that with a 7.68 pound flounder. Their winnings are a Flounder Bowl record payout of $13,400!

The second place team was the Sponsor Challenge winner with 14.89 pounds. Rest Time, sponsored by M & M Custom Painting, was captained by Kenny Hoffman. They won $2,000.

Third Place was Bunker Down captained by Clayton Hicks. They weighed in a stringer of 14.53 pounds and won $1,500.

Fourth Place was Hound Dog captained by Derick Hall. They won $1,000 with a stringer of 14.51 pounds.

Fifth Place was No Regrets captained by Steven Hodges and sponsored by Hopkins Gun and Tackle. They weighed in 14.32 pounds and won $500.

Sixth Place was Hogchoker, sponsored by Walsh Electric, and captained by 2-time Flounder Bowl champion, Brian Hogge. They weighed in 13.98 pounds winning $250.

All of the teams not placing in the top six were entered into a “Lucky Dog” drawing for $500. This year’s Lucky Dog was team Zing Zang captained by Troy Waller. Zing Zang donated all of the mixed drinks at this year’s event so nobody was too upset when Zing Zang won the Lucky Dog.

Each team received door prize tickets for chances to win the many great prizes donated by the tournament sponsors. The tournament started Friday night with a barbeque and a captains meeting and finished on Saturday with a seafood feast and award presentation party.

Total payout for this year’s Flounder Bowl was $19,850 and merchandise. The Flounder Bowl is held out of Dare Marina and is conducted by the Peninsula Salt Water Sport Fisherman’s Association. The Tournament Director is Nelson Ortiz. Tremendous sponsor and angler support has allowed the Flounder Bowl to donate proceeds to various worthy causes like the Children’s Hospital of the King’s Daughters, the CCA, the RFA, and locally to families in need. This year, donations have already been made to the Children’s Fishing Clinic and to the Salem United Methodist Church Wickel Food Pantry.

The Flounder Bowl is not possible without hundreds of hours of volunteer work and the support of the sponsors:

The largest fish caught during the tournament was caught by the Never Enough team with David Brabrand. Unfortunately for them, red drum are not eligible for the Flounder Bowl. The citation-sized red put up a great fight on their flounder gear though.

The one boat that got towed in was our second place finisher. They made it out to the Chesapeake Bay Bridge Tunnel and broke down. After a long tow in, they got their boat fixed and went fishing. It was too late and too rough to run back out to the CBBT so they just fished inside the York River. There are some nice flounder in the York, nice enough to win second place and the Sponsors Challenge!

Most of the other winning catches were made by boats braving the rough conditions at the CBBT where flounder catches were good with multiple boats coming back with limit catches.

Cobia, Spot, Marlin

I went out sight fishing for cobia with Hunter Southall on Friday. The forecast was terrible for sight fishing but we went anyway as our main purpose was to take a load of offshore tackle to the boat to get ready for our first tuna trip in the new Healthy Grin. We got out on the water, the clouds cleared , and we had great condition. We did not do great on the catching. We only saw a half-dozen cobia, catching one.

Saturday, I went out in-between rain showers and fished the Poquoson River with a sabiki rig. I was trying to catch little spot for the Flounder Bowl that is coming up this week. I caught a bunch of spot and croaker, all too big.

Sunday, we went out to the Norfolk Canyon for the first tuna trip in this Healthy Grin. The crew asked how the wind was. I said that it was blowing and reminded them that I had sent them multiple weather updates asking if they were sure they wanted to go. Steve Martin said, “yea but who do you think wanted to be the first to back out”? I replied that I thought it would be the smart one. Charles Southall thought that was funny and said that there is nobody here that fits that description. We went out and it was blowing NE 15-20 out there. It was not nice but fishable and we had high hopes of catching a bigeye like the 278 pounder that Brent Meadors had caught the day before. We had just gotten the spread out and the blue and white Ilander gets bitten. We are thinking tuna. The fish stayed down but not down enough for a bigeye, maybe a yellowfin. When we could first see color, we thought we were getting ready to gaff a big wahoo. We did not know it was a billfish until it was at boat side. Still, we were not sure what kind as it had not fought like a white and had a hatchet dorsal. This is when we discovered that we had no gloves on the boat. A towel worked and a quick look at the anal vent confirmed we had a white marlin that was quickly gotten back in the water after hook removal. Turns out the new boat is better at marlin catching than tuna catching. We just got the boat moving again and the crew yells, “fish on”! This one jumped. Another white marlin had come in and hooked itself on our tuna gear. We were more prepared for this one and removed the hook and released it boat side. I did not have my good camera upstairs to get the jumping shots. I was mostly just holding on for dear life anyway so it is probably a good thing. Two white marlin releases and we had not trolled the length of a football field. It was slow after that. We caught some dolphin. We then got our bigeye bite on a Green Machine behind a spreader bar. That thing made an impressive run straight down until the crimp failed at the hook. Later, we had another equipment failure when a big blue marlin crashed one of our baits, about 500 pounds or so. It put on an impressively violent show until the wind-on leader failed at the mono-Dacron splice.

Father’s Day Cobia

I got out early this morning and fished until about 10 am before coming back in for Father’s Day stuff. I caught a couple more cobia and pulled off a third. My cousin, Phillip Neill was out there and he had a single cobia when I left. I thought I had had a pretty good morning then I found out that, in even less time than I fished, Wes Blow had caught 10 cobia. I still had a good morning, just not a Wes Blow morning. We were all chumming.

More Cobia This Afternoon

I went back out this afternoon. While setting the anchor, a big cobia swam right up to the boat. I had nothing ready to throw to it but it was a good sign. Got set up and something and I broke something big off on a croaker. It was too big to be one of the sharks but it did not come up like the cobia usually do. I expect it was one of the rays that were swimming around. I re-rigged the rod and dropped the little bait rod down by the chum pot to catch another croaker. Immediately, I got bit and it took off, not a croaker. It was a cobia on blood worm fish bites on a bottom rig. Well this was not going to last long. Up comes a bigger cobia chasing the little one I am hooked to. Fighting the one cobia with one hand, I cranked up one of the eels up off of the bottom and just had it hanging just under the water. I brought the little cobia near it and sure enough, the other one ate it. I managed to net them both. Got them out of the net, took a quick photo and released them both.

JT Hale was out there also and had pretty much the same results, 2 cobia. He did catch his, one at a time.

Cobia Today

Chummed off of Back River this morning and came in before the storms started up. Caught 3 cobia up to 50 inches long and had the hook pull on a larger fish. The fish was on the surface and I watched the hook come out with the eel still on it. I was not happy. I just dropped the eel back down beside the chum bucket while I got everything straight. Immediately, it got eaten again. I got that one, happy again. Mostly, I caught sharks plus a southern stingray and a turtle. Releasing the turtle was more nerve racking than releasing the sharks and the stingray.

Friday-Sunday

I got to fish a bit each day. Friday, I chummed at Stoney Lee. Caught 2 cobia. Saturday, we cruised around looking mostly along the Baltimore Channel. We saw a lot of cobia but only caught 2. Sunday, cruised around the oceanfront in the morning. Saw a couple schools of drum and a single cobia. Caught a big red before coming in.
