Memorial Day Weekend

We made it out for two short trips and a very full day of fishing over the long weekend. Wes Blow and I ran the Healthy Grin to the shoals for a short afternoon drum trip. We found out that my windless is not working. Wes became the windless and he did a good job. He also caught a big red drum before we ran in.

Getting up very early to get ready to head offshore bottom fishing, I received a message from Charles Southall. They were just heading in from the shoals and had caught 8 big red drum, loosing several others. We headed on out to the Norfolk Canyon area and caught a lot of different fish. We caught a half-dozen golden tilefish, blueline tilefish to 18 pounds, a number of hake, bluefish to 34 inches, blackbelly rosefish, sea bass to 4.5 pounds, tinker mackerel which became bait, some impressive conger eels (one of which Wes kept), and 3 or 4 species of shark from little chain dogfish up to a 7-foot (I’m calling it a sandbar until told differently) shark caught by Chris Boyce. Chris was using one of Wes Blow’s bottom rigs. It got interesting when Wes decided that he wanted to get his rig back. When he figured out what he was helping with, Dr. Hamish Small, in his very Scottish accent, said, “All this for a #*@#*! hook? This has to be one of the dumbest things I’ve ever seen”. I don’t think Wes got his hook back but it was a much smaller, spiny dogfish, that really made him bleed with a nasty puncture wound.

We had Roger Burnley fishing with us, visiting from his current home in New Jersey. Roger caught a new species to us. After almost cleaning the current world-record Carolina hake, we decided to not clean this fish until we figured out what it is. The fish is going to the Virginia Institute of Marine Science today for identification. We know it is some type of scorpionfish. The identification so far from the photographs is a spinycheek scorpionfish. If so, it is about a pound heavier than the current world record. This would be the 12th All-Tackle World Record caught on the Healthy Grin and the 3rd for Roger. He has set the Snowy Grouper World (and Virginia) record twice and is the current record holder.

On Memorial Day, I went back to the shoals with Charles Southall. It was rough and got rougher when the tide turned. We did not stay long. We missed a few drum bites. Charles caught a big sheepshead. I had a cobia follow a piece of crab to the boat as I cranked it in after a missed bite.  Fishing is good in Virginia right now.

More Really Good Drum Fishing

I went out yesterday afternoon with Wes Blow. In spite missing fish, pulling the hooks, and actually breaking several off, we managed to land 15 drum. Wes tagged and released them all. Our total included 2 black drum and 13 red drum. We both had to go to work in the morning so we left them biting. Gorgeous evening on the bay. We had a slick calm ride back to the ramp were there was a May worm hatch going on.

World Record Approved

The Carolina Hake, caught by Johnny Boyd earlier this year, has been approved as the All-Tackle World Record for the species by the International Game Fish Association. Boyd’s fish weighed 5 pounds 10 ounces when it was weighed at the Virginia Marine Resources Commission. The fish was examined at the Virginia Institute of Marine Science (VIMS) to confirm the species identification. Boyd donated his fish to VIMS to be added to their fish collection.

Boyd was fishing out of Virginia Beach aboard the Healthy Grin. Johnny’s fish establishes the initial world record for Carolina Hake. It is the 11th All-Tackle World Record caught on the Healthy Grin.

Really Good Drum Fishing

We went out yesterday afternoon in Charles Southall’s boat and started catching drum as soon as we got anchored up. There were three of us with David Brabrand rounding out the crew. I started out tagging and releasing the fish but it got too hectic and we just released the fish as fast as we could. If you were not getting a bite, you had already lost your bait. Charles had forgotten his net (again) so we used a combination of lip gaffing and just reaching over the side and grabbing them until Wes Blow was kind enough to go to my house and bring us my net. We did not lose a single fish at boat side. I don’t know how many we lost due to pulled hooks or how many we just plain missed. By the time we used our last clam, we had boated 20 black drum up 51 inches long. We had a number of multiple hook-ups with as many as 5 drum hooked at one time. We caught all 5 of those. We just had to leave two in the rod holders while we fought the other 3.

Wes set up next to us. Fishing by himself, Wes caught 7 black drum up to 49 inches long.

Some other of our fishing club board were out there. Capt. JT Hale caught 9 black drum on the other side of us. Capt. Rick Wineman was closer to the surf zone and caught 5 red drum and 5 black drum. Capt. Jorj Head joined him in there later and caught a couple of big red drum.

Big red drum, cod and tog Sunday

I went drum fishing with Charles and Hunter Southall. We caught a few sharks, missed some bites and Hunter caught a full-grown red drum. We tagged and released it.

Wes Blow hit an inshore wreck for cod. He and Keith Blackburn caught some cod and 11 tautog. The tog were tagged and released now that season is closed. They then came in to the beach where Wes caught, tagged, and released a red drum. We are the boat in the background of the photo of Wes’ drum.

A bit south of us down the beach of Fisherman’s Island were Richie and Dylan Moore. The caught and released a big red drum. I don’t have a photo of that fish.

Sea bass, tog, cod

Tried an offshore wreck for big tog. Caught big sea bass. Caught one big knot head that really hurt to let go. Came back inshore and caught some tautog and cod.

Quick Tog Trip Today

David Brabrand and I fished an inshore wreck today. We kept our 6-fish limit, tagged and released others. Took DNA samples from each.
