Brown Fish

Today was my Flounder Bowl lay day. I went out and had a great clearnose skate bite going on when a cobia interrupted the action. Will try to catch a different kind of brown fish tomorrow.

Father’s Day Cobia

I went out and did some cobia fishing today prior to the Father’s Day festivities. Fishing was very good. I was getting my 4th rod ready when all 3 of the others went off. Somehow, I managed to land all 3, fishing solo. I also landed a double. Most of the fish were 40 something inches long. I caught a couple that reached the 50-inch mark. I caught one that already had a tag in it.

Fishing Yesterday

We went offshore yesterday and the tuna bite was slow. The tuna are still there and were active on the surface much of the day. Boats using green sticks had better catches. We only caught one yellowfin tuna and a couple of gaffer dolphin. We had some other encounters including a lit-up white marlin that charged around but never bit anything.
Danny Forehand was out there in his boat with much the same day. He gave up on the slow tuna bit after catching one and a couple of dolphin. They went bottom fishing catching a couple of snowy grouper, sea bass, and blueline tilefish up to 12 pounds.
Mark Evans and Cameron Wainright chummed inside the bay on the Lauren B with Randy Blanchard. They caught a couple of nice cobia.

Cobia Today

Caleb Sava caught his first cobia today. His dad, Gabe is in the photo with him. They were fishing with Charles and Hunter Southall. Caleb’s fish was 56 inches long and he decided to release it. I was about a mile from them. I caught a cobia also. Mine was not as big as Caleb’s.

Yellowfin Tuna and Mako Sharks

We fished the Norfolk Canyon today. Fishing was good. We ended up catching 18 yellowfin tuna. 17 were in the 35-50 pound range. The other, was the smallest yellowfin we have caught. Makos were thick. We caught 4 out of 5, all on monofilament leaders. We kept our one. We also caught a half-dozen dolphin and a couple of skipjack tuna. We quit early and left them biting when we had run out of places to put fish. Tuna were busting on the surface and mako sharks were free jumping all around us.

Cobia and Red Drum

Hunter Southall went out in his boat with Steve Martin yesterday. They fished for cobia (Hunter had caught 3 to 52 inches the day before). They caught 2 cobia then Hunter came back in to join us on his dad’s boat (Charles). Gabe Sava also joined us for a night of drum fishing. Fishing was good. We landed 9 large red drum having as many as 3 hooked up at a time. We pulled the hook on 5 drum and missed other bites. We came in because some of us had work in the morning. Hunter got up and went cobia fishing again with JT Hale. They have caught one cobia and at the moment, they are still fishing.
