Started out my birthday with a little cobia fishing. Caught 6 cobia and was back in for lunch.

Cobia

We went cobia fishing yesterday. Caught six chumming in the morning. One was a strangely spotted fish and it had a deep gash on its dorsal. We then ran across the bay and spotted a couple on the way to the tarpon grounds. They will be here later this month and I wanted to get a good track on the new electronics. Bounced bottom a bit but we got there and back. We then set up for drum without any luck. We did not drum fish long as I was fishing again in the morning.
My dental assistant had fished for cobia but had never caught one. I thought that was silly. She has now caught two.

Ran back out today. Managed to catch a cobia before the storms chased me in. I missed a few and broke one off. It looks to be another good cobia season.

Cobia This Morning

I ran out and did some cobia fishing this morning and ran back in to beat the storms. I caught and released 6 cobia, missed others, and pulled the hook on one. The guys that get out on Monday (opening day), should do well.

Commission Meeting Cobia

Today was the monthly meeting of the VMRC. This usually means a day away from the dental office in a coat and tie. Because of this “social distancing” thing, today’s meeting was held online. It still meant a day away from the office but there was no coat and tie. I wasn’t even wearing shoes. After the meeting, I did slip on some shoes and jumped into the boat for an afternoon cobia trip. I caught two, missed one, and pulled off a big one after it led me for a few laps around the boat. If I was going to loose it, now was a good time. It would have hurt more next week when the season is open.

Baby Cobia

I fished the edge of Poquoson Flats this afternoon. Missed a couple, pulled the hook on one, and caught a little cobia. I’ll get a bigger one when the season opens June 1.

Supermoon Reds

Ran over to Fisherman’s Island before moonrise yesterday evening. Missed a couple, lost a couple, and caught a couple of reds. I tagged and got a photo of the second. The first, I had to release quickly so I could catch the second that was trying to get my attention with a screaming drag.

Big Red Drum

Afternoon Drumming

I ran over to Fisherman’s Island after work yesterday. Caught a couple of big red drum and ran back home. There were a few other boats over there doing the same thing and a boat was set up at the buoy 13 area for black drum. I do not know if he had any luck.
