Big Rock

I spent the past two days trolling eels on the eastern side of the bay. Both days were really calm. One day had a beautiful sunrise, the other had fog and rain. Big rockfish were being caught both days. It took me two days to catch one…but it was a big one. It measured 52 inches long.
Most of the big fish action seemed to be from buoy 42A on up to the Range Tower. Fish small enough to keep were being caught in the Cut Channel.

Pretty Sunrise

Trolled eels on the eastern side. Got to see a pretty sunrise. At the end of the day, my eels were ready to come home. No bites. A few big fish were caught, 38A to 40A seemed to be the best area.

tog and stuff

My co-worker, Meghan Wells wanted to take her dad, Michael, to catch some tautog. So, I took them out to a coastal wreck today and we ended up with a nice box full of fish including tautog, sea bass, and a handful of triggerfish. Meghan caught a tog that had already been tagged and as usual, she put the most fish in the box. Mike did catch all of the triggerfish. I drove the boat and I did manage to catch a few tautog to be of some use.

Morning Tog

Our son and his girlfriend are visiting from Michigan. There was some talk about them wanting an early morning fishing trip to see the sunrise over the Chesapeake Bay. This was not that morning. I left the house with everyone asleep. It was a pretty sunrise. I stayed in the bay and was back in for lunch. The tog bite was pretty good. I kept a few, tagged others, and caught one that already had a tag. Maybe, we can try a sunset cruise for the kids.

Halloween Tautog

Caught some tautog in the bay yesterday. Not a hot bite, but steady. Did have something big break me off after a lot of drag pulling. Expect it was a big drum.

Short Trip

Ran to Back River Reef this morning. Caught a black drum. Lost my wreck anchor. Came home. Shrimping has been good from my dock.

Virginia October

Summer is over, everyone should put their boats away. I mean everyone else. I’m fishing. I did some trolling along the beach and fished a bit on one of the reefs in the bay. Cobia are still around. The ribbonfish are abundant. I caught Spanish mackerel up to 5 pounds. In the bay, I caught small tautog and black drum. I tangled with some big reds that I did not catch. The offshore boats are coming in with tuna and flying billfish flags. The coastal wrecks are holding triggerfish, sea bass, and flounder. It is a good time to be fishing.
