Foot Loose

I fished for reds this weekend with Charles Southall and Stan Simmerman. It was cool except when it was cold. It was fairly calm except when it was rough. We caught some dogfish and some big reds.
But…the best thing was the call I received from Stan saying that he was going to be a little late. He had stopped by Grafton Fishing Supply on the way to my house. The lady there pointed out that he was wearing a boot on one foot and a sneaker on the other. I am not sure what Stan did the night before but I guess that it was fun. He went back to his house to get his other boot.

Big Red

We ran over to Fisherman’s Island to try for big red drum today. It was too cold. The water was too cold. It was too windy. But, the drum are here. I had Stan Simmerman and David Brabrand with me. We had a handful of bites. We caught a shark, had a few crabs taken and had two drag screamers. One hook pulled and one didn’t. David tagged and released our first bull red of the season. Meanwhile, my wife, Tricia, was back at home photographing some of the visiting waterfowl.

Inshore Tautog

We stayed close to home today. Stan Simmerman, Johnny Boyd and myself fished for tautog. We caught 46 though Stan says I missed one while taking a photo and thinks we got 47. We tagged fish until I ran out of tags. We caught one fish that had already been tagged. We kept a nice box of tautog and we caught a single 23-inch puppy drum. Water temperature was in the mid-50s, the tog bite is on.

Foggy Togging

I ran back out to the Triangle Wrecks today. I had Stan Simmerman and Wes Blow with me. The ride out was really calm. A little afternoon breeze kicked up for the ride in. We were socked-in fog all day. We kept a mess of nice tautog: 2 citations, tagged and released others, and caught one that I had already tagged a couple of months ago. It had not grown.

Playing Hooky

Both of our hygienist were off today. My practice coordinator said that I could take the day off also and go fishing. Off to the Triangle Wrecks I ran. The tautog were really aggressive today. I did catch of few sea bass but it was mostly a tog bite as soon as I got down to the wreck. This lasted for about 3 hours of non-stop action. The fish averaged in the 18-20 inch range with only a few under 16 inches. I kept a limit of fish from 19 to 23 inches long, tagged and released others, and caught 3 fish that had already been tagged. The forecast looks good for tomorrow…I don’t think that I can get away with playing hooky again.

Today’s Tog

I fished the Triangles today. I kept a limit of tog from 18 to 25 inches long. Tagged others. Caught a few sea bass, keeper-size if the season was open. The bird photos are Tricia’s. Our backyard has been busy. Ospreys were hunting the creek today. The first I have seen this year.

Sunday Tog

I ran out after tautog today with Wes Blow and Stan Simmerman. We caught some. I got the big one. Should weigh somewhere in the teens tomorrow. We also caught and released some big sea bass and Wes lost a pollock while swinging it in the boat. I caught one tog that was just short of being a keeper…a tail short. The fish seemed to be doing ok with no tail but it did not fight much.
When we got back in, Tricia was hanging out by a warm fire which we quickly joined. Our feet were cold. She had been visited by the neighborhood eagle again today.

Wrecking Today

I ran out after tautog this morning. The first wreck I tried was sea bass ridiculous. Big sea bass immediately on each drop. I never could feel/explore the wreck with my sinker so I decided to drop with no bait on the hook. It did not matter. Big sea bass hooked up immediately. Twelve more big sea bass on a bare hook got me wondering if we overthink this fishing thing too much. I was not going to catch a tog there so onto other wrecks where I still caught sea bass but they were fishable. Tagged some, kept some.

Togging

Ran out after tautog today. Fishing was good. I kept my limit and released others. I caught one tog that had already been tagged. That one got to swim away. The largest tog was a bit over 9 pounds and another was close. The most impressive catch was a sea bass that weighed 7 pounds on the Boga Grip. It hurt a little, letting that one go.

Foggy Wrecking

We ran out on the last day of the year, and the last day of sea bass season, to a calm and foggy ocean.
On a personal note, my cell phone died. I sent Charles a text to let him know where we were headed and that was the last of life for my phone. So, I’m not ignoring anybody on purpose. Until I can get a new phone…email, call the house, office, or just call Tricia. Half of you already know her number.
Fishing was good. Stan Simmerman, Johnny Boyd, and myself kept a limit of nice sea bass. We kept 19 triggerfish and released others. A half-dozen were large enough to weigh for citations. I caught the only tautog.
It was a great way to see out the old year. I guess I will see in the new year shopping for a phone.
