Fun Specks

I fished with Stan Simmerman this morning. We had a lot of topwater bites that did not hook up. We both lost fish by the boat. Stan lost a big one. We ended up landing 8 speckled trout with 3 being between 22 and 22.5 inches. All were tagged and released. We also caught 5 bluefish and a sea mullet. We were back in for lunch.

After Work

An afterwork bite is not a bad thing. 2 specks, 1 pup and 4 other blowups.

Meghan’s Birthday

Today is Meghan Wells birthday. She wanted to take the day off of work. My ability to do dentistry is greatly diminished when Meghan Wells is not there but it increases my chances to go fishing so today, we all took off to celebrate her birthday. I pretended to be retired and joined Stan Simmerman, who really is retired. We mostly cast topwaters all day. I don’t know how Meghan’s birthday went for her but Stan Simmerman and I enjoyed the heck out of it! Our final catch included 7 speckled trout to 22 inches, a gray trout, 5 bluefish, a puppy drum and 6 ribbonfish. Ribbons do hit topwaters. I pulled off a big trout and Stan lost a monster. We had a lot of bites that did not stay tight. I had one that did. Looked and sounded like a big trout bite but that fish was screaming my drag. I told Stan that it had to be a drum. He said no, a really big trout. We never saw it but if it was a trout it would have been a record. My very next cast got blown up twice before hooking up and it did turn out to be a pup. Not as good of a fight as the fish prior but I think I had just pulled off a drum…and not a record trout…but…we caught nice trout there also. I really liked Meghan Wells birthday. When I’m back in the office tomorrow, I’m going to find out who has the next birthday!
Oh, apparently, I now live in a world where fat trout are released and skinny ribbonfish are kept. I can hear my grandfather now, “what is wrong with you boy?”

After work yesterday, I ran out to the flats and cast the topwater a bit before getting ready for today’s trip. That resulted in a lot of blow ups, a couple of red drum, a couple specks and a bluefish. I’m liking middle-of-the-week fishing!

Morning Sheep

Ran out after sheep this morning. Stayed close to home. Caught black drum, red drum, and a sheepshead. Also caught some tautog and some really impressive oyster toads that I did not take photos of because I didn’t want my fishing buddies to make fun of me. Kept the sheepshead for dinner, released the rest.

Before Work

Got up in the dark and looked outside. It was raining…back to bed…but the topwater bite is supposed to be better in the rain and it wasn’t raining that hard. Put the raingear on and walked to the boat. Pulled up an un-baited minnow pot that had one minnow in it. Took the minnow and ran to the flats. Put the minnow under a cork drifting behind the boat. It got eaten by a shark. Topwater bites were bluefish, at least the ones I held onto were. When it got lighter, I cast to some water that had some color. It was a big school of drum. My bait was knocked out of the water 4 times before finally being crushed and the fish went screaming across the flats. The thing thought it was a bonefish. These pups fight hard on light tackle. I was awake now. By the time I finally encouraged it to come to the boat, it was time to go in and get ready for work. This work thing…

Ribbon Day

It was a ribbonfish kind of day. Caught a bunch. No king bites.

Topwater Trout

I went speckled trout fishing with Stan Simmerman this morning. We had some impressive topwater bites. We caught 5 speckled trout from 20.5 inches up to 26.5 inches long. We also caught a couple of bluefish. All of the trout were tagged and released. Two were registered for release citations: 25.5 and 26.5 inches.
Now, for the ugly truth…I caught the 20.5-inch trout. Stan caught all of the rest and none of his were close to being that small. Apparently, again I was brought along to net his fish and to take photographs.

Short Trip

Ran out to the flats for sunrise. I had zero bites but saw a rather nice sunrise. Made a short try for a sheep. Caught a black drum. Pulled off a couple that I thought were sheep but then again, I thought the drum was a sheep so what do I know?
