Puffer

No luck with the trout this morning. This smooth puffer thought he was one. Fought pretty good, thought I had a puppy drum.

Ribbons and Sheep

I trolled plugs along the oceanfront yesterday. I caught ribbons. This morning, I stayed close to home and caught big sheep and some tautog. The ribbons were not too bad. There were enough that those that wanted to catch them did but they were not overwhelming.

Slower Bite

It was slower bite this morning. I had about 6 hits, hooked 3, landed 2.

Specks

Caught a few nice specks this morning. Lost a couple bigger ones. I managed to hold onto 8 fish up to 23.5 inches long.

Quantity

I fished for specks again this morning. I only had one over 20 inches today compared to three yesterday and all of those were larger than today’s 20.25-inch fish. But, by 9 am, I had caught and released 18 speckled trout. I have no idea how many bites there were. Fun morning. I even saw a cobia cruising along the edge of the shallows. I elected not to cast to it with my speck rod.

morning bite

I ran into a nice speck bite this morning. I ended up catching 6 trout and missed others, including a boatside, topwater explosion that scared the heck out of me. All 6 were tagged and released.

Father’s Day Specks

I went out dark and early this morning to try and catch a speckled trout. It was still dark when I had my first bite. I hooked up my second bite and it did not feel like a houndfish. It was still dark and I was not sure what I had but it turned out to be a nice speck. Too dark to get a photo. Another cast and another bite. I thought I was in an epic trout bite and I’d guess it was epic for about 45 minutes. The sun got up, the wind shifted, the current changed and the bite stopped. During those 45 minutes, I caught and released 3 speckled trout and had a number of other bites. It was worth getting up early for that.

Fish Week

I turned 60 this week. I decided this was time to add another fishing day to my work week. Tuesday, Stan wanted to catch a citation-size sheepshead. So, we got him his citation. The only sheep we caught. Pretty much every morning, I was met by houndfish and the sunrise. Today, after my morning houndfish, I fished for cobia.
I started with two on at once which is a trick when you are fishing by yourself. Somehow, I managed to land both. I ended up catching 5 cobia before coming in for lunch. I kept my one and released the rest. Of course, I lost the biggest one I had hooked up. The bad thing fishing solo, is that it does me no good to blame the captain, angler, or net man.

A sheep

Stan wanted to try and get his citation-sized sheep today. He got it. It was not joined by any others.

More Sheep

I went back after sheepshead with Stan Simmerman today. First, we stopped on the flats for a sunrise topwater bite. We got them, catching two houndfish. I do think I had two of the right bites but did not hold onto either. Ran on out to the structure and very shortly, I had our first sheepshead on. Soon, I was followed by Stan. We are going to whack them. That was it. We had a few more bites that felt right but pulled them. We caught a good number of tautog, too many oyster toads, and a puppy drum. I saw 4 cobia while anchored and got cast on all of them with no hook ups.
