White Marlin Research

from one of Dr. John Grave’s students. They are doing some very cool stuff at VIMS and the local charter captains are going out of their way to help.

Hi Ken,
Now that the white marlin season is pretty much over I wanted to thank you again for all your help with getting started, making contacts, tagging and sampling fish, and sharing your amazing pictures. I could’t have done it with out you!! I managed to sample 24 fish and put tags on 9 of those on five different boats on 23 fishing days over the course of the season and I am convinced I can get many more samples next year now that I have several great contacts. I currently have 5 tags “talking” with the next 4 scheduled to pop up in the next week. Three of those that are talking popped up are either across the Gulf Stream or down around Hatteras, but one tag popped up in the Caribbean! That fish we tagged on the Healthy Grin on 9/16 and it made it over 1000 miles in thirty days! Pretty cool stuff. While I don’t yet have the data from the tags I will share it with you when I get the reports from the tag manufacturer. Thanks so much for your support and lots of fun days on the water! Good luck with the fishing this winter-if I don’t run into you this winter I’ll see you next season!

Best,

Lela
